New Jersey Primary Election Recap

News

On June 10, New Jersey voters cast their ballots in one of the most closely watched and expensive gubernatorial primaries in state history, setting the stage for a high-stakes general election this fall.

Former Assemblyman Jack Ciattarelli secured the Republican nomination with nearly 68% of the vote, returning to the statewide spotlight with a message closely aligned with the MAGA movement. Meanwhile, Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill emerged as the Democratic nominee, winning key counties and positioning herself as a champion of affordability, clean energy, and working families.

This year’s primaries also marked a turning point in New Jersey politics with the elimination of the county line ballot system. Despite the structural change, party-backed candidates largely prevailed—though the Assembly races proved far more competitive, with insurgent candidates making significant inroads in several districts.

As New Jersey heads toward a general election on November 4, voters will choose between two well-known candidates with sharply contrasting visions. The outcome is expected to have national implications, particularly as one of only two gubernatorial contests in the country this year.
